Photography Special: Cyanotype (Sun Prints) | Sat 17 Jun | 12-2pm | £35 | 16+ yrs | Tutor Helena McGregor | Studio 3, Dark Room, Print Room & Garden
The Photography Special: Cyanotype (Sun Prints) workshop teaches participants how to use the power of the sun to create beautiful, one-off photographic prints.
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print, which was traditionally used by engineers as a low-cost way to produce copies of drawings, also known as blueprints. The sunlight reacts with photographic chemicals painted onto paper, fabric, and other materials to capture photograms of objects or can be used in conjunction with negative images, to create blueprint photographs.
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
In this workshop, participants will collect natural forms from the Brewery Arts Garden and/or use negative images to compose beautiful prints by mixing cyanotype chemicals and coating paper. There will be experimentation with different exposure times and additives, such as salt and washing-up liquid, to create interesting patterns and textures. Finally, the prints will be developed and taken home following the workshop.
Who is it suitable for?
Photography Special: Cyanotype (Sun Prints) is suitable for all abilities, everybody is welcome. Participants may never have tried cyanotype before or they may wish to revisit the technique and consolidate the basics.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring an apron and/or wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Bring your glasses, if you need them.
If you would like to use your own photos to make cyanotype prints, please email up to two black and white photos to helena.mcgregor@breweryarts.co.uk 48 hours before the workshop start time. There will be some images available to use during the workshop supplied by the tutor.
