24th November 2018

Tutor Hannah Ehlert | Fee £59 | 1 session | 10.30am – 5.30pm

Give your festivities a rustic touch this season: Wreaths, stars and hearts, angel wings … or gorgeous birdfeeder and stylish cheese platter – who can resist?

What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?

Enjoy a productive day of learning about some of the traditional principles of willow weaving. Just in time for christmas, we will use these to make festive decorations for the season! Whether used to embellish the wintery garden, house door or your table and tree, the projects are beautiful and natural. They look great combined with slices of dried citrus fruit, fabric and ribbons in festive colours etc.
There will also be a section where students can get advice on how to gather their own hedgerow material, or how to order and treat willow and what tools to get.
Students will go home with at least 3 items of varying difficulty.

This course is suitable for all abilities and age 16 upwards and no previous experience is required.
Students should be able to have full use of both arms and hands. People with strongly strained shoulders or wrists might struggle with manipulating the withies.

Starting with hands-on projects, you will be learning basic rhythms of weaving, principles of ratios, moisture and limits of the material.

Stepping the projects up in difficulty, we will move from door or table wreaths on to hearts, angel wings and halos, stars and will finish with a woven raindeer.

If there is time we will be using the old technique of corn dollie weave for a bird feeder.
Also the workshop will explain about foraged or bought materials, how to prepare withies to be ready to work with, and other materials to incorporate, and give you inspiration to work with this wonderful medium.
We will talk about sourcing hedgerow material and what to look out for, as well as the few tools needed for basketry.

The course will be taught in a mixture of demonstration and application in the group.

Expect to go home with at least 4 pieces of work of varying sizes and levels of difficulty.

What do I need to bring with me?

BRING your own finery: all RIBBONS; BELLS and other decorative materials you wish to incorporate!

Please also bring pen + paper to make notes, and your glasses if needed. If you have sharp secateurs, please bring those along!

Are there any additional costs?
All tools and basic material will be provided. The additional cost for material will be around £10, to be paid to the tutor directly. Of course, if people have access to suitable soaked willow and other hedgerow materials, they can bring their own from home, in that case please let the tutor know in advance via email timbertales@gmail.com
