Step into September with a vibrant new season at Brewery Arts!
A new season begins at Brewery Arts this September, with a packed programme across our stages, screens and creative spaces.
On stage, Moving Pictures – Rush Tribute, Very Santana, Lindisfarne, Jazz Club: Harben Kay & Stephen Henderson, Total Stone Roses, Cara Dillon, The Springsteen Sessions, Altered Images, and Mary Coughlan bring everything from classic rock and folk to jazz and acoustic performance.
Also taking to the stage this September, Alasdair Beckett-King and Seann Walsh bring standout comedy to Kendal, alongside our ever-popular Comedy Club. Poetry Club and Verbalise return with spoken word and open mic performances, while Dave Rowntree shares stories and photographs from Blur’s formative years.
Our Cinema programme brings cult classics, landmark anniversaries, documentaries, special Q&As and world-class Stage on Screen and Exhibition on Screen productions. Across the month, our new Creative Learning season begins with courses and workshops for all ages, while the Young Artist Open and Arts Unleashed Exhibitions continue across our galleries.
Plus, with local food and drink in our Bar & Restaurant, refreshed spaces and Brewery Social events throughout the month, September is full of reasons to visit, stay a little longer and soak up the creative atmosphere.

Moving Pictures – Rush Tribute

Legendary 70s folk-rock pioneers Lindisfarne return to form with a classic five-piece line up of long-time members fronted by original founder-member Rod Clements on vocals, mandolin, fiddle and slide guitar.

Jazz Club: Harben Kay & Stephen Henderson

Award-winning musicians Harben Kay and Stephen Henderson bring together two distinctive UK jazz voices in a new duo project, creating adventurous, expressive music through composition and improvisation.

Altered Images

Altered Images songs have always had an established audience and, in recent years, a brand new one as well. Still led by singer Clare Grogan, the band performs to enthusiastic crowds worldwide to this day!

Mary Coughlan

Dave Rowntree: No One You Know

Through unheard stories and candid photos from his bestselling book No One You Know, Dave Rowntree looks back on Blur’s formative years, from early friendships in Colchester to world tours and their famous rivalry with Oasis.

Verbalise: Louise Exactly

Verbalise brings emerging voices and acclaimed artists together on one stage. This month welcomes Wigan performance poet Louise Exactly, known for her sharp, socially conscious work exploring northern working-class life, politics and contemporary issues.

Cinema
Enjoy cult classics, landmark anniversaries and powerful documentaries on our big screens this September. Revisit two icons of big-screen cinema with The Terminator Double Bill (5 September) and Raiders of the Lost Ark – 45th Anniversary (12 September).
The BFI’s Rip It Up season explores youth rebellion, culture and expression on screen, with anniversary screenings of This Is England (16 September) and Trainspotting (26 September).
Our Beyond Horizons environmental and social justice film festival kicks off with Our Planet, The People, My Blood (10 September), exploring the devastating legacy of nuclear weapons testing, followed by a live Director Q&A. Later in the month, It’ll Never Work and X Trillion (30 September) are followed by a special Q&A with X Trillion director Eleanor Church.
Plus, discover the wonderfully unusual story of cult cabaret performer The Iceman in Melt It! The Film of the Iceman (19 September), followed by a Q&A with Mark Cartwright, Robert Wringham and a mystery guest. Our Stage on Screen and Exhibition on Screen programmes also return with world-class theatre, opera and art, including Turandot on Sydney Harbour (1 September), National Theatre Live: The Misanthrope (from 24 September) and David Hockney At The Royal Academy Of Arts (29 September).

Creative Learning
Our autumn season of Creative Learning begins Tuesday 15 September, with a programme of popular weekly courses for all ages alongside a range of one-off workshops. Highlights include adult beginners courses, Beginners Guide to Digital Photography and Drawing for Absolute Beginners as well as our Youth Arts courses, Clay Club (7-16yrs) and Makers Club (7-14yrs), for those who love building and sculpting.
Cine-Social returns on 2 September with a new season of themed film screenings and discussions for cinema enthusiasts.
Our Creative Learning team are looking forward to welcoming local primary schools and playgroups into our studios for visual arts and dance taster workshops, introducing young people to creative experiences in a fun and engaging environment.

Exhibitions
The Young Artist Open Exhibition is free to visit in the Sugar Store Gallery and runs until 31 August. It celebrates the creativity of local artists aged 4-18. This year’s theme, Adventures, brings together big quests, small discoveries, real-life experiences and imaginary worlds through the eyes of young artists.
Running alongside the Young Artist Open in the Foyer Gallery, Arts Unleashed Exhibition showcases artwork created by participants of this year’s Arts Unleashed Summer Camp, also inspired by the theme Adventures.

Ease into September at Brewery Arts with the best of local food and drink, from Fell Brewery beers served across our newly refreshed Malt Room and Foyer Bars to delicious locally made flavours from our friends at Lakes Ice Cream.
Our Bar & Restaurant celebrates the flavours of the Lakes with seasonal dishes, locally sourced ingredients and plenty of options for all ages, including our Kids’ Menu of smaller portions and family favourites.
Whether you’re joining us before a film, catching up with friends or simply dropping in for a drink, settle into the refurbished Vats or enjoy Kendal’s largest beer garden.

Brewery Social
New for September, our Stitch Club launches on 22 September with a relaxed evening of knitting, crochet and all things yarn. Bring along your latest project, grab a drink from the Bar and meet fellow makers – whether you’re experienced, learning a new skill or starting from scratch.
The Brewery Arts Quiz returns on 16 September, while our bi-weekly Tuesday Social offers relaxed, inclusive evenings of live folk music and shared creativity. Join Jackie, Andy & Friends on 1 September for an informal traditional folk session, then enjoy the natural a cappella harmonies of Close Quarters on 15 September – with plenty of opportunities to join in or simply sit back and listen.
On 2 September, our Youth Arts Networking Event welcomes young creatives aged 16+ to meet, share ideas, collaborate and develop new projects in a safe and inclusive space. Whatever your creative practice, bring along your work, start a conversation and connect with other local creatives – with pizza provided on the night.
