19 December – Christmas Word Party

Come and hear brand new Christmas themed poetry. 12 open mic spaces available in the first half. Part two will be filled with word games, audience participation and festive surprises!

30 January – John Alexander Scott

Featuring guest writer John Alexander Scott, a popular performer on the local spoken word scene. He’s a poet, novelist, visual artist and music and word collaborator.

27 February – Ash Dickinson

Ash Dickinson has been full-time as a poet since 2008. A multiple slam champion, he has performed in Australia, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Spain, Jordan, Denmark, The Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic and Germany, and headlined countless shows and festivals throughout the UK. His latest book, ‘Instructions For Outlaws’, was published in 2022. One of the most distinctive and unique poets working in performative environments, Ash’s ability to combine vivid surrealism with humour, while still holding up a mirror to our world, is a rare gift.

27 March – Trystan Lewis

Winner of the inaugural Morecambe Poetry Festival poetry prize and The Plough Poetry Prize Trystan Lewis performed at Poetry Club last year supporting David Viney. He was so popular, lots of people were asking when we could have him back. Trystan says: “I try to write unpretentious, accessible verse that moves people and yet avoids the cloying or the trite, the false sentiment or the easy resolution.”

24 April – Rose Condo

She’s back! Our favourite Canadian spoken word artist, one-person show award winner and ace creator of the podcast ‘Have a Kind Word with Yourself’ Rose Condo. If kindness were an Olympic sport she’d be a multi-gold medalist. Come and hear some of Rose’s greatest hits and something new.

About your host

Ann Grant is the co-founder and host of Verbalise. It’s important to her that the space is friendly, welcoming, accessible and has a sense of community. Ann has hosted live events in pubs, festivals and theatres across the UK. She has been the South Cumbria Poet Laureate, and she’s a workshop facilitator who enjoys collaborations and writing for wellbeing.

More about the event

Verbalise was formed in 2009 to create a platform for emerging performance poets in the Cumbria and Lancashire area. Writers from all disciplines are welcome to perform for 4 minutes or less on the open mic, including storytellers, songwriters, novelists and comedians.

At each event, we have a featured guest who is an established or emerging writer. We have a no hate speech policy, and the performers and audience respect each other with people new to reading their words being encouraged and welcomed.
