In Real Life: Nature In The Dark Room | 9 Nov | 12-4pm | £60 | 16+yrs | Tutor Liam Collins | Dark Room and Serpentine Woods
These monthly workshops are an antidote to the digital world, immersing you in the process and craft of sensual textured art-forms, engaging fully with the physical world to create a unique piece of work. All levels of experience welcome. Throw away your phone, slow down, be present and make something new.
We will spend an afternoon exploring our natural surroundings while learning the basics of analogue photography. Bringing our experience back with us into the darkroom, we will create photographs, photograms and inventive combinations of the two, using traditional black and white photographic materials and a variety of wild things!
What will the workshop cover and how will it be taught?
In this workshop we will cover techniques for shooting, developing and printing black and white photographs in the darkroom, as well as photograms, and creative, layered approaches to making original images. We will be outside in Kendal’s Serpentine Woods and then inside, in the magic of the Brewery Arts darkroom, making our experiences into unique imagery.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone who wants to engage with the natural world while experimenting with and learning more about analogue photographic processes. Expect a gentle exploratory looking-walk in the woods before warming up in the darkroom and studios. The walk will be slow, however it is a little hilly and uneven underfoot in the woods. Unfortunately, this means the event cannot be wheelchair accessible. It is down to individuals’ own decision as to their ability to participate.
What do I need to bring with me?
35mm camera if you have your own – but if you don’t have one, we can provide one for you. Raincoat and sturdy footwear.
Are there any additional costs?
No, we will provide a roll of film for each participant, chemicals to develop negatives, and photographic paper.
