This course will explore multiple forms of fiction writing and some of the many roads into creative processes. Unpacking core literary devices and testing them in stories, students will use weekly prompts to write short stories and share in feedback.
What age range/level of experience is this for?
This course is for writers with ongoing projects or more experience.
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
Across ten weeks, this class will consider different ideas in storytelling and prose writing suitable for both long and short stories. We’ll share a supportive space to experiment with writing and develop new ideas, exploring in-depth the narrative elements of character, voice, place and story structure. Students will also draw on free-writing, individual reading and broader reflections on the creative process.
Students will respond to a new writing prompt every week, with group discussions exploring different ways to use the prompt or theme in fiction writing. We’ll read stories and share in class discussion; group feedback will identify strengths and areas to develop further. Depending on the interests of individual students, the class will also explore additional ideas around publication, performance, networking and sustaining a writing practice.
Who is it suitable for?
This course is aimed at experienced writers seeking structure, accountability, inspiration, homework tasks, free-writing exercises and group reading/feedback.
