Learn to Paint | Wed 18 Jan to Wed 29 Mar | 7.30-9.30pm | £144 (9 wks) | 16+ yrs | Tutor Catherine MacDiarmid | Studio 3

Working from both objects and images, this course will cover some basic painting with oil and acrylics, observation skills, mark-making, and colour-mixing.  Painting techniques will be explored through a series of practical tasks and exercises, culminating in longer painted compositions. 

What will the class cover and how will it be taught? 

During this course, you will learn some basic painting techniques from alla-prima to layering up in both oils and acrylics.  You will learn through a series of set tasks and exercises working from both objects (like a still life) to images (digital or photographs), learning observation skills as you go.  Through an experimental approach to painting, your mark-making language will expand and allow a personal style to develop and grow.

Methods of learning in the course:

This course will be taught through a series of demonstrations and practical activities. Looking at other artists’ paintings and the work of peers, and having one-to-one time with the tutor will facilitate your individual learning to enable you to achieve in this course.

Who is it suitable for?

This course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh or learn to use acrylic and oil paint.

Important Information

Please note there are no sessions during the week beginning 20 February 2023.

What do I need to bring? 

All painting materials need to be provided by the students. The first class will deal with equipment considered necessary by the tutor for use during the course.

Please bring:-

  1. Basic set of acrylic paints (5-6 colours plus white will do).
  2. A range of brushes, including one 1” brush).
  3. Material rags.
  4. Tray, large lid or similar flat surface to use as a mixing palette.
  5. Water spray bottle.
  6. Any Acrylic painting mediums that you want to try – like Retarder, Glazing medium etc.
  7. Water pots.
  8. Some grease proof paper.
  9. Small sponge.
  10. Gesso primer.
  11. Two large surfaces to paint on.
  12. A small notebook and pencil.

When using art materials your clothes could potentially get dirty so you may wish to dress accordingly.

About the tutor 

Catherine MacDiarmid is a local artist who has exhibited widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait in 2001/2 and regularly at the Mall Galleries, London.  She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 reaching the semi-finals in 2019.  As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is in collected internationally and she works from her studio in Kendal.  Her artwork focuses on the human form, exploring expression and movement in both drawing & painting.
