Tutor Sophie Martin | Fee £63 | 5 weeks
This course will give participants the opportunity to further explore the medium of book illustration. Participants will be given a book illustration brief at the start of the course and will work to create a narrative book in response to the brief.
What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?
The course is most appropriate if you have already done the beginners course and would like to continue your creative explorations or if you have some prior experience and would like to further hone your skills in a supportive environment. Those without specific prior experience but with a focussed idea and lots of enthusiasm are welcome too.
Exploration of different types of book illustration
• How to approach a brief
• Researching and sketching ideas
• Communicating visually using chosen media
• Working from an initial idea to a finished artwork
• Using storyboarding to develop and pace a narrative
• Page layout and composition
• How to receive and build on feedback
This is a practical course and participants will be working as a class in some tutor led activities but there will also be plenty of opportunity for independent working with tutor guidance and feedback when desired. There will also be some class sharing of ideas and inspirations and informal group critiquing of work to develop skills in giving in receiving feedback and to help each other develop ideas. There will be a brief given at the beginning of the course to develop a book based on a given theme but if participants already have a project in mind then they are welcome to adapt this to fit the brief.
By the end of the course/workshop you will:
• Generate ideas in response to a given brief
• Explore and develop narrative and research strategies
• Understand the relationship between illustration and text
• Have an understanding of composition and layout of pages
• Be able to use a storyboard to break down a narrative
• Develop visual communication skills
• Create an illustrated narrative from start to finish
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring any particular drawing pens and pencils you may want to use, a notebook and your glasses, if you need them.
Are there any additional costs?
