Meet the tutors

Our Adult Education classes are taught by practising artists, makers, musicians and dedicated enthusiasts in their fields.

Catherine MacDiarmid is a local artist who specialises in portraiture, typically working in oil, charcoal and pencil. She has exhibited widely; her work has been selected for show at MAFA and the BP Portrait Award, and also features in private collections throughout the UK as well as abroad. Catherine has worked as an adult tutor for over 16 years, helping students explore a range of disciplines within drawing and painting

Dominique Pluskwa is a native French teacher, with over 10 years’ experience in Adult Education. She teaches widely across South Cumbria at varying levels.

Caren Threlfall has many years’ experience teaching in Adult Education, working in numerous centres across the county.  Carens classes are always fun, friendly. 

Frances Winder is an Artist resident in Kendal, well known for her work in Mixed Media, Watercolour and Acrylic paint. More recently she is experimenting with collages and printing and her work can be seen in several galleries in the area  

Iain Sloan was Master Printmaker. From 1980-2004 Head of Printmaking at Blackpool and the Fylde College of Higher Education and Further Education.
2004-2012 Lecturer in Visual Studies at the University of Cumbria – Painting, Drawing, Printmaking and Installation.   

Janni Howker’s literary awards include the prestigious Whitbread Prize for Children’s Literature and the Somerset Maugham Award. She has many years’ experience as a tutor and most recently was working with the University of Cumbria. Her classes are very popular and many students go on to have work published.   

Catherine Bond is an experienced language teacher with a degree in French and German. During her degree she spent a term at university in France, and a year as a language assistant in a school on Lake Constance, on the Swiss/German border. After completing a PGCE she spent   2 years living in Italy, learning Italian, and working as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language, which she continued to do in Oxford on her return to the UK. She has been teaching Italian, German and French for Cumbria Adult Education for the past 2 years. 

Florence Tourne is a native speaker who has lived in the Lake District since 1994.  She has taught French for several years, running lively French courses in Cumbria.  She has a passion for teaching and sharing her knowledge of France and Belgium with others.

Tricia Lyon MA, is a practising artist and designer who has a wide experience of teaching in further and higher education. Her work in pastels is mainly garden portraiture and she has exhibited and sold many paintings. She also creates textile pattern designs and lectures on digital techniques for design. 

Marilyn Hale has her own Studio just outside Ulverston and trained with the Creative Glass Guild in Bristol and in other studios in Wales  and Lancashire.  Marilyn has taught Crafts in Adult Education Centres throughout Cumrbia for 15 years. Peter Threlfall has been a professional artist for almost thirty years. He has worked as a commercial artist producing Illustrations for Architects and Interior designers along side selling his fine art. He works in a variety of media, and has worked on anything from book illustrations to 27m long murals! His main subject matters are Landscapes and Cityscapes which are now selling worldwide.    

Chris Barnes has taught art and pottery in adult education and schools since 1993. He is a practising potter with a backgound in fine art, particularly sculpture (BA hons Fine Art - St Martin's School of Art 1982). Before moving his studio to Cumbria Chris helped set up the Chocolate Factory Studios in London and had his own pottery in Argyll. His ceramic work has been exhibited widely in the UK and in Germany.
Dorothea Williamson is from Stuttgart in Germany where she has taught in secondary education. Since Moving to Lancaster in 1990 she has worked in adult education: first for 20 years with the Languages for All programme at Lancaster University, then also at the Adult College in Lancaster and at the Brewery. She enjoys teaching, working with groups and creating a supportive and fun atmosphere for learning. Finding out about different traditions, customs and current affairs in German speaking countries is part of it and enriches our courses.   

Thuline De Cock, born in Belgium, is best known for her original take on animals. She has been successfully selling paintings and drawings in Galleries both in the UK and abroad, and from the web. She also does regular commissions. She sells high quality prints and her paintings are available for licensing. She has been teaching in Adult Education since 1997. 

Jo Dix started making jewellery in 1999 as a hobby. She soon progressed to commission work, and produces work in a variety of media, although silver and gold are her favourites. Jo has OCN and City and Guilds Jewellery and Silversmithing Qualifications, and is a Level 1 Art Clay Silver Instructor

Amy Williams - Amy is a professional artist working in Cumbria. She has exhibited her paper-cuts both locally and internationally. She is keen to share her enthusiasm for this medium and pass on her skills to others. 

Sarah Burnett - Sarah is a working mother with a passion for fashion & furniture. She has a Foundation Course in Art & Design and a Fashion Degree. Together with 8 years’ experience in high street and online retail with her own business, she has a part time job buying second hand furniture, upcycling it and selling it online.  

Rachel Cabble - Rachel is a mum to 3 boys and runs a successful upholstery business - Killington Upholstery and Textiles Services (KUTS).  She is qualified to Level 2 of the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF).  Rachel lives locally and is passionate about all things furniture. 

Hazel Barratt is a local piano teacher and community musician. She has a degree in music and teaches pupils of all ages from beginner to ABRSM Grade 8 standard.

Angie Mitchell is an artist/teacher with over 23 years’ experience.  Her work is inspired by the drama and colour of the Lakeland hills and Morecambe Bay Estuary in which I live, it’s ever changing weather and it’s moods. Angie uses various mark making and printing techniques to add detail and information about the texture and pattern.  Angie is our resident printmaker teaching a variety of printmaking techniques.

Pilar Valera graduated in Politics and has taught for more than 20 years from beginners to advance level. Exam and non-exam courses, to a range of ages and abilities. She is from Madrid and although she lives here she runs study-breaks in Spain for adults, and summer courses for children.  Pilar teaches Spanish rom Beginners to Advanced.

Greer Shepherd began studying Sign Language in 2000 and has a BSL Level 3.  She has worked at Kendal Deaf Vision Office and now works with their Communication Support Unit to deliver interpreting services to the Deaf in Cumbria.  Greer also works at Carlisle college enabling Deaf students to access lectures through Sign Language.

Nicola Sproson
Stepping down from fell running in the Lake District mountains, Nicola discovered Nordic Walking as a kinder alternative to her body. I have a historic back injury which has been an ongoing issue with most exercise she have tried, until Nordic Walking! Her aim with Nic’s Nordic Walks is to make your exercise experience an inspiration to keep fit outdoors which will become part of your daily life.  She wants Nordic Walking to become second nature to those who try it, which should in turn improve mental and physical wellbeing.

Colin Reynolds is a professional photographer based in Kendal, Cumbria. He specializes in landscape photography but also does product photography for local businesses. Colin has taken photographs for most of his adult life, he has his own studio and gallery in Kendal. As part of his professional practice he also teaches one day and residential courses in the Kendal area on all aspects of photography and printing.
