The Gigspanner Big Band are a unique force in British folk music.

After spending the past two years touring with best-selling author Raynor Winn (The Salt Path), the band returns to their six-piece format with their brand new album Turnstone. Their highly energetic, virtuosic performances appeal to both traditionalists and those seeking something more experimental.

The band has earned praise from publications like fRoots, The Telegraph, and The Wire. The latter described them as “melodically folk-rooted yet open and innovative beyond the constraints of genre.”

Originally a trio, the band started with legendary Steeleye Span fiddle player Peter Knight, percussionist Sacha Trochet, and guitarist Roger Flack. Since then, the lineup has expanded to form the Gigspanner Big Band. Now, they are joined by multi-instrumental duo Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin – BBC Folk Awards ‘Best Duo’) and Bellowhead co-founder and melodeon player John Spiers.

Peter Knight, part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s lineup, helped define folk rock. Meanwhile, John Spiers has had a profound impact on traditional music over the past two decades.

The Gigspanner Big Band is known for its riotous inventiveness, technical skill, and subtle collaborative interaction. This ensemble combines a deep knowledge of roots traditions with a boundary-pushing approach to music.

Unsurprisingly, the superlatives have come thick and fast…

“What a fabulous team they make, together producing a startlingly new musical form with few, if any, antecedents. The flights of musical fancy are staggering in their natural invention”
Fatea Magazine
“Some of the most important and exhilarating art ever to sit under the banner of folk music”KLOF Magazine
“Musical brilliance is abundant” Mojo Magazine
