Winter Relief Printing

Printmaking
  • Tuesday 15th September 18:30

Tue 15 Sep-1 Dec (10 wks) | 6.30-8.30pm | 18+ yrs

The course will cover a range of techniques using simple lino blocks, extending the range of mark making and colour combinations possible and will include jigsaw blocks and lino etching as well as more traditional processes. It will be taught using demonstration, lots of real-life examples and hands on experience.

The course is suitable for most people and prior print experience is not necessary, but it will also suit those who have some experience and would like to develop their practice. Tuition is always tailored to the needs of the class. To make the best of print room time, you will be encouraged to develop work outside of the classes – but that is optional.

What do I need to bring with me?

There will be basic lino cutting tools available to use during the sessions. However, you may want to purchase your own so you are able to continue to print outside of class time. If you would like some guidance on what tools to buy, please get in touch.

Basic resource list for the course:

  • Lino cutting tools.
  • Lino – the first A5 plate will be provided, but you may need more as the sessions progress.
  • Printing paper (basic cartridge paper will be provided, but you may wish to purchase some more specialist printing paper).

Printing can be messy! So, bring an apron or old clothes you do not mind getting messy. Additionally, bring several pairs of thin plastic gloves to protect your hands. You will also need some potential images to use as source material for your prints, these could be sketch book drawings or your own photographs.

Are there any additional costs?

Each student will be provided with an A5 plate at the first session to start with and basic cartridge paper for printing on but as the course progresses you will need to buy extra plates and pay for printing paper and a set of lino tools.

Important Information

This course will be held in the Print Room and Studio 3. There are no sessions during half term 26-30 October & 16-20 November.

About the Tutor

Caroline Stow is an experienced tutor, with over 30 years’ experience in adult education. She works in a range of mediums, (etching, woodcut, lino, monoprint) often combining different techniques layered into a single print:

‘I adore getting lost in the slow rhythms of making images by hand – designing, thinking about the meaning and resonances of the imagery I am using, as well as the technical aspects of making plates and printing. It is a medium which engages on many different levels. I particularly love the fact that there is always some element of surprise – until you lift your first proof you can’t really be sure of how the different elements will work together and printed marks can have a beauty and degree of spontaneity that I haven’t found anywhere else’.
