Drypoint is a traditional technique used to engrave and scratch into a surface to create an Intaglio plate without using acids or acids resists. Collagraph printing, a more modern technique, is the use of a variety of low-tech materials, collaged together to create a printing plate with an emphasis on texture. During this workshop, we will explore a mixture of these two processes by cutting, scratching and collaging Tetra Paks, a versatile material, to create original printing plates and limited edition prints. If you are interested in making more environmentally friendly artwork, this is a great way to recycle Tetra Paks – milk, juice cartons etc!
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
Initially, you will explore the qualities of the Tetra Pak and what textures and marks this will bring to the print and investigate different mark-making methods, such as, cutting, scoring and peeling into the layers of foil, plastic and card. You will create your own design, learn how to ink and hand burnish your plate, explore colour mixing, and then learn how to use the printing press to create your prints.
Who is it suitable for?
Whether you have never done printmaking before or you are an experienced printmaker who wants to explore an alternative technique, all are welcome.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring an apron and/or wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Bring your glasses, if you need them.
You may wish to bring your own images to work from – black and white or colour printouts are ideal. There will be a range of reference materials available to use, supplied by the tutor.
Are there any additional costs?
All materials and equipment are included in the price.
