Have you ever wanted to express yourself through writing your own songs, but aren’t sure where to begin? Songwriting for Beginners will provide you with the tools to unlock your creativity and develop your confidence as a songwriter.
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
Over 10 session this class will explore melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics and song structure, using exercises, prompts, and inspiration from existing songs. Sessions will include group listening and discussion, individual and group exercises, time for free writing, and opportunities to share work and receive feedback. Depending on the interests of individual students, the class will also introduce arranging, production, recording and steps to releasing music.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone aged 16+ who would like to start writing songs.
Important Information
No experience is needed, but you may find it useful to be able to play 3 chords on your instrument of choice, if you wish to accompany yourself.
This course will be held in the Warehouse. Please note that on 1 Oct this session will be in the Malt Room. There are no classes during the weeks commencing 27 Oct or 17 Nov.
What do I need to bring?
A notebook and something to write with, a willingness to sing and participate in group activities, and an open mind.

About the tutor
Anne-Marie Sanderson is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, who has been releasing music and performing for more than a decade. She celebrated the release of her new album, Old Light, with an album launch show at Brewery Arts last autumn and is currently recording a follow-up album. Anne-Marie performs regularly, and has toured widely in the UK, EU and US. In addition to writing and producing music as a singer-songwriter, she has composed for choirs and songs from her 2021 work “Finding our way: Songs for the Anthropocene” were premiered at Choirs for Climate in Edinburgh in 2023. Having studied music at King’s College London, she has taught in various settings, from coaching children’s rock bands, to running school choirs and orchestras, as well as instrumental lessons on the various instruments that she plays.
