People & Places: Sketching In Cartmel

Creative Learning |
12th June 2018

12 June | Tuesday | 10am – 4pm Lynda Gray | £59.00 | Max 10 people

About the course:

Spend the day sketching in the heart of Cartmel Village. Our base for the day will be the centrally placed village hall. Nearby are a variety of ancient and interesting buildings, including Cartmel Priory, the Gatehouse and the market square. It is a busy village so there will be plenty of opportunity for sketching people as well as places.

It is a tutored workshop suitable for a range of abilities, especially suited for those with a little experience who wish to improve.

What do I need to bring with me? Are there any additional costs?

You will need to be able to carry your materials to locations in the village. One bag plus a stool would be ideal.

Lightweight Stool (optional but a good idea)

Paper – Single sheets of A5 or A4 watercolour paper (NOT or HP) with small board for support.

Pens – Bring your favourite pens. If you are starting from scratch I suggest 3 fibre tips – 0.1, 0.3, 0.5. Micron is a good brand but there are many to choose from.

Pencil

Watercolours – portable watercolour box. No special colour requirements.

Water pot

Selection of brushes – minimum would be a medium brush for washes plus a smaller brush for detail.

Small sponge

Masking tape – optional but can be useful

Please check the weather beforehand – you may need suncream or waterproofs, or maybe both!

Bring a packed lunch or you’ll find several places in the village to purchase refreshments.

More details about the course:

There will be lots of ideas for developing your sketching, demonstrations of both line and wash techniques, individual tuition and opportunities to share work.

By the end of the session you will:

  1. Gain confidence in sketching outdoors in public places.
  2. Learn how to see first, sketch second.
  3. Be more selective with compositions, leaving out what is not important.
  4. Develop line quality.
  5. Improve simple sighting techniques to help with perspective.

Experiment with a range of watercolour techniques.

Access and facilities:

This workshop will be based in Cartmel Village, using the village hall as a base and meeting point. The Square, Cartmel LA11 6QB

Parking:

There is car parking available at the Village hall but we encourage car sharing where possible.
