Contemporary Portraiture

This course will provide opportunities for students to develop portraiture, exploring different techniques, processes and methods to capture character and likeness, using both primary and secondary source material. There will be exercises to develop observational drawing, as well as composition and the use of a background. Students’ will be exposed to both traditional and modern portraits and be encouraged to use these as sources of inspiration. There will be a model for five of the ten sessions.

What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?

During the course you will learn to:

  • Appreciate different portraiture styles and artists, both traditional and modern.
  • Expand your appreciation of portraiture by experimenting with different media, techniques and processes of developing a portrait.
  • Develop portraits from both primary and secondary source material.
  • Methods of learning in the course:
  • Practical work. Demonstration. Group work. Group discussion. One-to-one. Looking at work by other artists. Peer learning. Self-assessment. Tutor assessment.
  • By the end of the course/workshop you will be capable of :
  • Completing a portrait with more confidence.
  • Developing a portrait from both life and secondary source material.
  • Developing the overall composition of a portrait.
  • Appreciating a wider range of artists work.

Important Information
Please note there are no classes on the following dates:
Spring term: 17 to 21 February

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring charcoal, a putty rubber and A2 sheet of paper to the first session. You will be advised each week what to bring to the next session.

Some experimenting will be expected, however, students will be allowed to develop their chosen media

About the tutor

Catherine MacDiarmid is a local artist who has exhibited widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait Award for young artists in 2001/2. She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 reaching the semifinals in 2019. As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is in collections internationally and works from her home-based studio in Kendal. Her artwork focuses on the human form, exploring expression and movement in both drawing & painting. www.catherinemacdiarmid.co.uk
