Tutor Sara Dennis | Fee £99 | 5 weeks
Hand embroider a beetle a week. Each session you will learn a different embroidery technique – surface stitch, goldwork, whitework, blackwork and silk shading; all worked on white linen to create a series of beautiful and unique lavender bags.
What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?
By the end of the session you will: have been introduced to and practiced five different hand embroidery techniques; created a series of beetle themed lavender bags and be ready to tackle a larger more complex piece. Each week we will concentrate on one technique:
Week one – surface stitches – an introduction to basic embellishment using stranded cottons on linen.
Week two – goldwork – learning the uses and limitations of metallic thread.
Week three – blackwork – practice the art of counted thread embroidery.
Week four – whitework – concentrating on pulled work, eyelets and trailing.
Week five – silk shading – painting with a needle.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you have a basic sewing kit bring it along, but everything you need will be provided.

About the tutor
Sara Dennis graduated from the three year full-time Royal School of Needlework Future Tutor Programme in 2017 winning the Outstanding Achievement Award. Having led a peripatetic life, she has collected many experiences and influences. Now settling in Lancaster, she remains drawn towards the ethnic and eclectic.
Sara has worked on several high profile RSN commissions: an evening gown designed by Nicholas Oakwell Couture for the GREAT Britain Campaign, ‘Magna Carta (An Embroidery)’ designed by artist Cornelia Parker for the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, the Game of Thrones ‘Hardhome Embroidery’ and Burberry’s ‘Makers House’ in partnership with The New Craftsmen. She has exhibited at Hampton Court Palace and Alexandra Palace, and created a bespoke commission for St Olave’s Church in the City of London. As well as Day Classes, the Certificate and Diploma, Summer Intensive Certificate and Degree modules at Hampton Court Palace, Sara has also taught at the Victoria & Albert Museum, The British Library and The Royal Free Hospital.
