Artseen Advanced | Wed 24 April – Wed 3 July | 6.30-8pm | £89 (10 wks) | PAYG £10 | 14-18 yrs | Tutor Sophie Martin | Studio 2

The main focus of this 5-week course be to develop core drawing skills, portfolio building and/or general creative development. During this term, participants will experiment with mediums including charcoal, graphite, drawing inks, pastels, oil bars and watercolours. There will be a large focus on observational drawing, using a range of still-life, natural forms, and life drawing.

What will the class cover and how will it be taught?

The class will cover the basics of drawing, before progressing on to using more specialist art forms and working with guest tutors, who will share skills in their particular specialisms.

Participants will be encouraged through a combination of practical work, tutor demonstration and group discussion to:

  • Create a range of observational drawings using a range of mark-making techniques
  • Develop a use of line, tone and colour in their drawings
  • Practice hand-eye coordination and active observation in drawing
  • Experiment with different artistic media to create varied descriptive marks
  • Identify areas for improvement in their own work and those of their peers through group crits and informal discussion

Who is it suitable for?

This course is accessible for 14-18-year-olds with a range of drawing experiences, from beginners to more advanced, who are looking to build on core skills for studies or personal interests. Drawing is a key foundation skill for pursuing any creative discipline and is often essential for access to art programmes in Higher Education.

What do I need to bring?

All equipment will be provided.

About the tutor

Sophie Martin

Sophie Martin is a local artist, illustrator and educator who specialises in lively pen and watercolour illustrations often drawn on location. She studied visual communication at Edinburgh College of Art specialising in illustration and has worked since then as a freelance artist and illustrator undertaking numerous commissions and exhibiting locally and further afield as well as self-publishing a number of books. Sophie enjoys sharing her creativity through teaching and has a PGCE in post-compulsory education and experience teaching illustration and art classes and workshops in a variety of creative disciplines in both formal and informal education settings.
