An Introduction To Printmaking

Explore some of the many printmaking techniques through this course, which provides an introduction to monoprint, collagraph, simple relief and etching techniques. Learn the processes to create plates, apply ink and take a print using a printing press and hand burnishing. Discover the excitement of the ‘reveal’ as your print emerges.

What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?

The course covers various techniques and processes involving the transfer of ink from a plate to paper, starting with the simpler printmaking techniques of monoprinting and press printing you will start to create a range of printed images.

Further techniques will be introduced creating collagraphs, a collage technique using card plates, followed by drypoint, making marks directly into a plate, and etching metal plates using copper sulphate. You will use the printing press but also hand burnishing for some techniques.

Your tutor will guide and support you throughout the course using demonstrations, discussion, example work and handouts. Participants are encouraged to experiment with the emphasis very much on individual practical experience. There will be opportunities to discuss results individually and in the group.

What do I need to bring with me?

All equipment and materials supplied. An additional charge of £10 is made for materials.

Printmaking is messy so wear old clothes! You are advised to bring-

  • An apron or old shirt to protect clothes.
  • Gloves – latex or plastic

Be aware that some inks are oil based and solvents and other chemicals are used in the print processes which may affect some, particularly those with certain medical conditions.

Bring ideas! If you have images, photographs or sketches that you would like to work from please bring these. Over the course you may wish to work towards a particular subject or theme that interests you eg. Animals, plants, trees.

The first session involves monotype which relates to drawing or tracing over images.

About the tutor

Karen enjoys working with a range of painting and drawing media, including printmaking, sometimes combining these to create mixed media images. Each type of medium brings its own exciting possibilities and unique qualities, something she continually explores.

Her interest in Printmaking developed at Kendal College whilst completing a Foundation Degree in Drawing with the University of Cumbria. She finds the quality of marks made in the process of printmaking particularly fascinating and has produced prints using a variety of techniques.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Cumbria and Lancashire over the last 25 years and she has been involved with projects including Printfest and C-Art and runs occasional print workshops for the National Trust at Allan Bank, Grasmere as well as for private groups.
