11.30am-5.30pm | 16+ yrs
This is an opportunity to experiment with printing single images, drawing and painting directly onto a plate with ink and using masks and stencils to build up an image.
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
The class will be taught using examples, by demonstration and then hands-on experience of inking, making plates and transferring a design from plate to paper.
There will be a chance to consider the elements of design leading to a successful print and images can be built up in colour, sometimes incorporating several layers.
A basic introduction to the Health and Safety requirements for working in a print room including the safe handling of tools and equipment will be covered before starting to use the presses.
Who is it suitable for?
All welcome
Important Information
This course will be held in the print room.
We will be using linseed oil-based inks, which can stain. We will clean up with oil and low odour solvent.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring an apron, clothes that you do not mind getting messy and wear shoes that will protect your feet. No open-toed sandals, I am afraid! Thin plastic gloves are also essential, and basic drawing materials / a notebook are useful too. All printing materials will be provided.
All the materials you need will be provided, but you may like to bring in some images or A4 photographs to work with.
Are there any additional costs?
No, all materials are provided, but a selection of potential prompt images might be useful .
About the tutor
Caroline Stow is a local printmaker working in a range of mediums (etching, woodcut, lino, monoprint), often combining different techniques layered into a single print:
“I adore getting lost in the slow rhythms of making images by hand. Designing, thinking about the meaning and resonances of the imagery I am using, as well as the technical aspects of making plates and printing. It is a medium which engages on many different levels. I particularly love the fact that there is always some element of surprise. Until you lift your first proof, you can’t really be sure of how the different elements will work together and printed marks can have a beauty and degree of spontaneity that I haven’t found anywhere else.”
