Botanical Printing

Printmaking
  • Saturday 4th October 11:30

11.30-5.30pm  | 16+ yrs

This is an opportunity to experiment with printing directly from plants and other natural objects using monoprint, simple collagraph and embossing.

What will the class cover and how will it be taught?

The class will be taught using examples of work to handle, by demonstration and then hands-on experience. A basic introduction to the Health and Safety requirements for working in a print room. This includes the safe handling of tools and equipment will be covered before starting to use the presses.

Who is it suitable for?

This workshop does not require any specific skills to produce lovely prints.

Important Information: We will be using linseed oil-based inks, which can stain and cleaning up with oil and low odour solvent.

What do I need to bring?

Aprons or old clothes you don’t mind getting messy, and several pairs of thin plastic gloves to protect your hands. Please wear shoes that will protect your feet.

All the materials you need will be provided, but you may like to bring in some plant samples of your own. The best prints come from plants with a robust structure! Thick, juicy stems generally don’t work well, nor does anything too brittle, but sometimes taking a bit of a risk can give you something beautiful!

Are there any additional costs?

Cartridge paper will be supplied as part of the course. There will be more expensive watercolour paper available to buy for your final prints, or please bring your own

Important information

This course will be held in the print room.

About the tutor

Caroline Stow is a local printmaker working in a range of mediums (etching, woodcut, lino, monoprint). She often combines different techniques layered into a single print:

“I adore getting lost in the slow rhythms of making images by hand – designing, thinking about the meaning and resonances of the imagery I am using, as well as the technical aspects of making plates and printing. It is a medium which engages on many different levels. I particularly love the fact that there is always some element of surprise – until you lift your first proof, you can’t be sure of how the different elements will work together, and printed marks can have a beauty and degree of spontaneity that I haven’t found anywhere else.”
