The Cost of Growth + Q&A Panel Discussion (12A)

Cinema
  • Wednesday 22nd April 19:00 (Q&a)

The Cost of Growth challenges Europe’s growth story by exposing the extractive systems it relies on and the communities that pay the price. With an international cast, the film (90 minutes) connects struggles in Serbia, Italy, and Sápmi to wider fights for justice — showing how communities resist extraction, build solidarities, and expose the violence behind Europe’s economy.

Join us for a post-Film Q&A and Panel discussion with Mike Berners-Lee, Dr Jake Ainscough, Kate Rawles, Lena Hartog (producer – joining the discussion online), and local environmental groups.
More panelists to be announced..

Mike Berners-Lee
Mike Berners-Lee is the founder and Director of Small World Consulting, which has been working on climate change since 2005. He thinks, writes, researches and speaks about sustainability and the big system changes needed to overcome the climate and ecological crises in the Anthropocene. He’s also a Professor at Lancaster University.

Dr Jake Ainscough
Dr Jake Ainscough is a Lecturer in Environmental Politics at the University of Manchester with a keen interest in ecological economics. He explores how societies can make fair and democratic decisions as we shift towards greener, more sustainable ways of living; and how people, communities, and governments can collaborate to shape the transition to a low‑carbon future.

Dr Kate Rawles
A former university lecturer, Kate uses adventurous journeys to help raise awareness and inspire action on urgent environmental challenges. Her latest journey and book, The Life Cycle, explored biodiversity loss and extractivism in South America – a vivid encounter with the very real ‘costs of growth’.
