Observing from life is the perfect discipline to improve your drawing skills.  Portrait Drawing will provide an opportunity for people of all abilities to develop their drawing skills through the discipline of portraiture. You will be encouraged to try new techniques and have an experimental approach to some different drawing media.

What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
Working directly from a portrait model you will be guided through a series of mark-making and measuring exercises exploring different drawing techniques, using a variety of mediums.

Through a series of observational drawing tasks, you will learn to:

  • Demonstrate effective use of measuring techniques within portraiture.
  • Observe and draw more accurately through the discipline of portraiture and study of -the human form.
  • Practice and apply various drawing techniques, both linear and tonal, to portraiture in the quest to expand drawing and mark-making skills.
  • Experiment with various drawing media in order to expand the possibilities of drawing.
  • Appreciate and discuss drawings and portraits by other artists.

By the end of the course you will be capable of:

  • Using measuring techniques within portraiture.
  • Observing and drawing more accurately.
  • Using a wider variety of drawing media and different drawing techniques, both linear and tonal.
  • Identifying a wider variety of portrait artists.

Important Information
Please note there is no class during the week beginning 14 February.

What do I need to bring with me?
Drawing boards and easels will be provided.

Please bring:

  • A3/2 sketchbook (any further paper required will be discussed before each session), -soft lead pencils/graphite sticks,
  • willow charcoal
  • a putty rubber
  • tape or clips to attach the paper to a drawing board are essentials.

Other mediums will be explored and you will be asked to bring these along as and when necessary.

When using art materials your clothes could potentially get dirty so you may wish to dress accordingly.

About the tutor
Catherine MacDiarmid is a local artist who has exhibited widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait Award for young artists in 2001/2.  She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 reaching the semi-finals in 2019. As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is collected internationally and works from her home-based studio in Kendal.  Her art work focuses on the human form, exploring expression and movement in both drawing & painting.
