Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret About Gin

Comedy |
18th May 2019

Starts 7.30pm | Tickets £16.50 | Theatre |  Freerange

Equal parts historical and hysterical, lose yourself in the company of sailors, barmaids and bootleggers in this darkly comic cabaret. “Not only vocally sublime but a stroke of comedy genius” (TheatrePress), its critically acclaimed stars Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood return to the U.K. after playing to sold-out crowds in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and across Australia.

Mother’s Ruin is a raucous journey through 18th Century London, a few New York speakeasies, the Australian bush and the jungles of Peru. Discover a little more about your favourite drop, with this mixed up musical history lesson delivered with dry wit and “almost symbiotic harmonies” (Adelaide Advertiser).

With music originally performed by Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Martha Wainwright, Tom Waits, The Pretenders, Jessie J and more, Mother’s Ruin moves from misery to vaudeville in a moment, intertwining excess and prohibition, history and (re)invention.

“ … Marsden and Wood maintain a spot-on balance of larky humour, bolshy political consciousness, palpable passion for their subject and sheer joie de vivre. Well worth raising a glass to.” **** The Scotsman

“A raucous masterclass” ***** The Wee Review

“ … it’s the range, depth, and content of the stories Marsden and Wood tell us, along with the gorgeous harmony of their pure voices, that linger once the cabaret is over.” ***** Time Out Sydney

“Blisteringly entertaining… Not everybody falls in love with gin, but I can’t imagine too many audience members could resist the charms of Mother’s Ruin.” **** Daily Review

Nominated Best Cabaret, Perth Fringe World Festival; Best Writing, Green Room Awards; Best Cabaret, Sydney Theatre Awards.
