Crows’ Bones
By Martin Green (Lau)
Commissioned by Opera North Projects
With Martin Green, Becky Unthank, Inge Thomson and Niklas Roswall.
In the tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmastime, Crows’ Bones is a mesmerising collection of ghost songs old and new, pinpointing the essence of what is most beautiful and unsettling in the folk genre.
Led by Lau accordionist Martin Green, it is performed by a specially assembled group of folk luminaries made up of Becky Unthank (The Unthanks), nykelharpist Niklas Roswall and singer Inge Thomson (Karine Polwart band). Drawing together songs of murderous visitations and unnatural happenings, Crows' Bones takes you deep into a musical hinterland of broken music boxes and twisted gramophones to reveal the dark heart of folk song.
“Thomson and Unthanks' voices are both distinctively otherworldly in themselves, their uncanny potency here heightened yet further by a wealth of unexpected melodic and harmonic configurations, while Green and Roswall's instrumental contributions ranged from delicately disquieting atmospherics to nigh-on orchestral-scale ominous grandeur” ***** The Scotsman
“Best of all was Crows' Bones, a luminous musical collaboration between Lau accordionist Martin Green, nykelharpist Niklas Roswall and the haunting voices of Inge Thomson and Becky Unthank”.. “a must see” **** The Herald
