This autumn, we bring Beyond Horizons to the big screen; a new season of documentaries, short films and special Q&As running from September to December.
From the lasting legacy of nuclear weapons testing and the urgent realities of the climate crisis, to ocean pollution, Scotland’s Mountain heritage and the return of beavers to Britain’s landscapes, Beyond Horizons explores some of the biggest environmental and social questions of our time through personal stories, adventure and extraordinary filmmaking.
Across six special events, audiences will also have the opportunity to hear directly from filmmakers, environmentalists, campaigners and experts, opening up conversations around the issues explored on screen.
Our Planet, The People, My Blood + Director Q&A
10 September | 7.15pm
Through intimate first-hand testimony, a descendant of an Atomic Soldier uncovers the devastating legacy of more than 2,000 nuclear weapons tests and the ongoing fight for recognition and justice.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Daniel Everitt-Lock.
It’ll Never Work and X Trillion + Q&A
30 September | 7.15pm
Two films explore environmental change at sea, from one fisherman’s attempt to transform a traditional fishing boat using solar and electric power, to an all-women crew sailing 3,000 miles through the North Pacific’s densest accumulation of ocean plastic.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with X Trillion director Eleanor Church.
The People’s Emergency Briefing + Q&A and Panel Discussion
8 October | 7pm
A new film from the National Emergency Briefing brings the realities of the climate and nature crisis to the big screen, combining expert evidence with reactions and conversations about how we respond.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Mike Berners-Lee and Kate Rawles.
Postcards from the Peaks + Q&A
16 October | 7.15pm
Mental health campaigner Stu Skinner takes on an extraordinary challenge, carrying a cast-iron postbox to the highest point of all 15 UK National Parks while opening up conversations around loneliness, connection and the landscapes around us.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Stu Skinner MBE.
3000 Feet + Q&A
11 November | 7pm
Discover the remarkable story of Hugh Munro and the origins of Scottish mountaineering, exploring how science, culture and a shared love of the landscape shaped an outdoor legacy that continues today.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Kevin Woods and producer Lindsay Hill.
Beavers, Beavers, Beavers +Q&A
10 December | 7.15pm
An evening of films celebrating one of nature’s most remarkable ecosystem engineers, exploring beaver reintroduction, river restoration and the role these extraordinary animals can play in creating healthier landscapes.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Beaver Trust, and will be hosted by Kelvyn James Founder, CEO & Trustee of Wellness Walks.
Make a night of it and dine in the Brewery Arts Restaurant before or after your screening. Enjoy a warm welcome at our Bar & Restaurant, where local produce from the Lakes takes centre stage. Our seasonal menus feature dishes made for sharing, locally baked treats, and plant-based or gluten-free options.
