“Each lord of Ruddigore, despite his best endeavour, shall do one crime, or more, once every day, for ever.”

This is the curse that hangs over the Baronets of Ruddigore. The penalty for defying the curse is death by torture on the day the crimes cease, and each previous Lord of Ruddigore has died in this way.

Robin Oakapple, a young farmer loves Rose Maybud, but both are too shy to tell the other. However, things are not quite so simple as Robin carries a secret. He is really Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, the rightful Baronet of Ruddigore, in disguise. His younger brother, Despard, believing Ruthven to be dead, has assumed the title and the curse! Robin’s foster brother, Richard, seeking Rose for himself, tells Despard of Robin’s deception, and Robin is forced to accept his true position, losing Rose to Richard in the process.

Robin (Sir Ruthven), the Bad Baronet of Ruddigore, is now confronted by the ghosts of his ancestors who step from their picture frames in the gallery of Ruddigore Castle to admonish him for failing to commit his daily crime. Appalled by this life of crime, Sir Ruthven tries to find a way of satisfying his ancestor’s demands whilst continuing to live a blameless life…
