Lakes Alive 2017

Fri 8 - Sun 10 Sept

Prepare to be wowed once again as Lakes Alive returns to Cumbria.

The Lakes Alive festival promises a wonderful weekend of spectacular happenings in and around Kendal and the wider Lake District National Park. Working with the theme of ‘Cultural Landscapes’, this year’s festival will be showcasing world-class creativity in unexpected locations across the town and beyond.

Visitors to Lakes Alive will experience vibrant illuminations, digital delights, intimate performances and amazing installations. There are even rumours of a giant inflatable building appearing at the festival.

Kendal Castle light fantastic
Kendal Castle will host a beautiful field of light installation, the size of a football pitch, visible throughout the town. Created by artist Pete Johnson, Shipping Forecast is just one of the many highlights of the free festival.

Sounds of Cymbria
Other work includes a sound intervention by south Cumbrian artist Dan Fox – Cymbria – an intriguing new piece created with the voices and sounds of Cumbria.

Dance + music delights
London-based Folk Dance Remixed, a collision of traditional and Hip Hop dance and music, will delight audiences throughout the weekend along with several other contemporary dance companies.

Walk + sound adventure
Walk with Me is an adventurous walk and sound installation by Dutch composers Rob van Rijswijk and Jeroen Strijbos.

Other Lakes Alive events in Kendal
The hugely popular Jacobs Join will run again and Lakes Alive hopes it will become a local tradition which starts off the festival. The mass community get-together for food, drink, music and merriment takes place alongside the River Kent.

Other stunning art and participation activities will take place across the town including the Brewery Arts Centre, Abbot Hall, and Kendal Castle. Lakes Alive is also working with Merseyside artist Michelle Wren and Kendal’s Love Art workshops to create fantastic art with the community throughout the festival.

More details of further artists and events are set to be revealed in the coming weeks – find out more on the Lakes Alive website.
