Creative Learning The Art Of Charcoal

17 July | Tuesday | 10-4pm | Karen Lester & Woodmatters | £75.00 | max 12 people

Enjoy a day at the lovely location of the Footprint Building at St Catherine’s near Windermere, making your own charcoal and then using it to create drawings.  As well as preparing and baking the wood to make charcoal, learn about the history of the ancient craft of charcoal making in the Windermere area. Discover the subtle marks and soft lines this medium can create as you draw from life, out and about in the woodland.

The morning will focus on making the charcoal using locally sourced wood-

  • Prepare wood ready for the kiln, removing the bark
  • Bake the wood

Develop skills to handle charcoal experimenting with line and painterly effects-

  • Create a tonal range in your drawing through blending
  • Use lifting out techniques to create lights
  • Develop observational skills, drawing from nature

The emphasis is very much on practical individual experience and you will be guided and supported throughout the day with Tutor led demonstrations, examples and discussions.

What do I need to bring with me? Are there any additional costs?

All materials and equipment will be provided and you will get to take home your own hand made charcoal.

What to wear- You will be outdoors most of the time and though there is shelter, bring warm comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear. Charcoal is messy so wear something suitable such as old clothing.

Bring a packed lunch, tea and coffee will be provided.

Please bring a pen, notebook and your glasses, if you need them.
