Strong Women Street Theatre on Saturday July 21st celebrates the achievement of Women’s Suffrage in 1918. Taking place within Kendal Community Theatre’s ‘ The Trouble with Women’ festival it tells the story of the part taken by Westmorland women in the fight for suffrage. Kendal Community Theatre and members of the Women’s Institute, the Mothers’ Union, Rangers, political parties and others will march through the town singing ‘The March of the Women.’ Marchers will chain themselves to railings of the Birdcage, the Library and each other. Short speeches will reveal the conflict between pro-universal suffrage Theodora Wilson Wilson, Eleanor Acland, suffragist, Eleanor’s sister, Mary Cropper of the Anti- Suffrage League and Emmeline Pankhurst suffragette.
