There is something magical about the combination of Indigo dye and Shibori techniques. In this workshop you will create your own indigo hand dyed fabric by stitching, wrapping and pleating the fabric.
What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?
This workshop will be of interest to all those who love working with textiles. During this workshop we will cover the different methods of preparing the fabric for dyeing, including traditional Japanese techniques and more random methods. You will learn how to make up the Indigo bath and how to maintain it so that you get the most from it. You will be taught through demonstration, group discussion and handouts that will be provided.
What do I need to bring with me?
- Needles, threads and sharp scissors.
- A pair of rubber or latex gloves.
- Materials to be used for wrapping/tying the fabric e.g. elastic bands, old buttons, bottle tops and corks, bulldog and paper clips.
- Please wear dark clothes or an art shirt.
- Gill will bring along cotton samples and a tote bag each to dye, but if you have a white t-shirt or old linens you’d like to revamp or some fabric for a project you’re working on please bring it along.

About the tutor
Gill works as a designer/maker from her studio in Silverdale. After working in the textile industry as a designer/colourist for 15 years she now works with felt and creates surface pattern designs. She works with various felt making techniques, including flat felt, 3D felt making and nuno felt, which she indigo dyes. Recently Gill has been working on a series of needle felted birds and woodland creatures which she exhibited at Silverdale Art and Craft Trail and Lancashire Craft Open Exhibition.
Gill is as an experienced tutor who works in adult education, with guilds and art groups and as an artist in residence in schools.
