Porcelain

14th January 2020

14 Jan – 31 Mar | 2 – 5 pm | Tutor Chris Barnes | £189 (10 weeks)

This ten-week course is designed to help you gain experience and understanding of working with porcelain clay. The purity and translucent quality of porcelain is matched by its inherent limitations in workability.

You will be shown how to get the most from this refined material and how to avoid the pitfalls of high shrinkage and low plasticity. The course will include glazing and decorative techniques to enhance your creations. Possible projects include all manner of pottery, jewellery, lighting and small sculpture.

Previous experience with clay is advantageous for students but by no means a requirement of the course.

The class is run with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. A creative approach to design and making is encouraged.

What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?

Tutor-led demonstrations, discussion, example work and handouts will guide you through the process.

During the course you will learn to:

  • Work super thin to enable translucency.
  • Glaze to enhance translucency.
  • Avoid uneven shrinkage and cracking.
  • Create surface texture and relief patterns with wax resist.
  • Make coloured porcelain for jewellery and “Nerikomi” style pottery.
  • Sculpt and model flowers and shells.
  • Throw with porcelain.
