Oil Painting From Life

This course will provide students with the opportunity to develop painting direct from a life model using oils. It will cover good oil painting practice, learning to use different painting techniques, limited colour palettes and colour/tone mixing. How to look and translate the figure and the use of some measuring technique will also be covered. The higher fee for this workshop reflects using a life model each week.

What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?

During the course you will learn to:

  • Appreciate basic measuring techniques in relation to the life model.
  • Mix colour and tone with purpose and meaning.
  • Understand and represent tone and structure of the human form.
  • Develop mark-making with oil paint through different painting techniques.
  • Appreciate the works of other artists in relation to painting and the human form.

Methods of learning in the course:
Practical work. Demonstration. Group work. Group discussion. One-to-one. Looking at work by other artists. Peer learning. Self-assessment. Tutor assessment.
When you have finished this course you should be capable of:
Oil painting from life with more confidence.
Mixing colour and tone with purpose and meaning.
Representing basic form and structure of the life form in oils.
Appreciating a wider range of artists life paintings.

Please note there are no classes on the following dates:
Autumn term: 11 to 17 November

What do I need to bring with me?

All painting materials need to be provided by the students. Students are asked to bring one dark oil paint (black, burnt umber, ultramarine blue or another dark colour of your choice), a brush, material rags, turps or similar oil solvent (for washing brushes) and four surfaces to paint on to this first session (the surface should be cheap and well primed with an acrylic primer (e.g. gesso). Students should also bring a small notebook and pencil.

When using art materials your clothes could potentially get dirty so you may wish to dress accordingly.

About the tutor

Catherine MacDiarmid is a local artist who has exhibited widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait Award for young artists in 2001/2. She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 reaching the semifinals in 2019. As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is in collections internationally and works from her home-based studio in Kendal. Her artwork focuses on the human form, exploring expression and movement in both drawing & painting. www.catherinemacdiarmid.co.uk
