Further develop your acrylic painting skills and gain confidence, exploring techniques and mixing colour effectively.
This is a follow on course for those on the Acrylic course for Beginners or other previous beginners’ acrylic courses
What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?
Working from landscape photos and some still life (flowers) you will look at ways of working from start to finish with reference to a subject, consolidating previous basic experiences. You will further develop skills and knowledge including –
- Imapsto techniques
- glazing techniques
- opacity and translucence
- effective colour mixing – creating tonal ranges
- ways of working –make a start, blocking in, finishing detail
- applying lights and darks
The emphasis is very much on practical individual experience with tutor-led demonstrations, discussion, example work and handouts which will support and guide you throughout.
What do I need to bring with me?
- Paints – Bring the paints you have! We will work with yellow, blue, red, white and black as a minimum. Suggested colours are cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, titanium white and ivory black. ‘Artist’ quality paints provide the best pigment but a good brand of student quality paints is also good eg Winsor and Newton Galleria brand. Your Tutor will discuss palettes further at the first session
Medium- Acrylic matt medium (liquid) - Acrylic paper – Hahnemüle or other good make. At least A4 size
- Brushes – You tutor will advise further on brushes but for the first session please bring at least a medium-sized acrylic brush, size 8. A range of brushes, hog hair type and soft brushes, flat and round, different size brushes are useful.
- Water pot- plastic. Yoghurt pots are good!
- Plate to mix paint- Pot plates or plastic trays. Paper plate is fine to start with. ‘Stay wet’ type paint container, if you have one. (plastic box)
- Kitchen paper towel or rags
- Your Tutor will discuss materials in more detail at the first session.
- Please bring a pen, notebook and your glasses, if you need

About the tutor
Karen enjoys working with a range of painting and drawing media, including printmaking, sometimes combining these to create mixed media images. Each type of medium brings its own exciting possibilities and unique qualities, something she continually explores.
Her interest in Printmaking developed at Kendal College whilst completing a Foundation Degree in Drawing with the University of Cumbria. She finds the quality of marks made in the process of printmaking particularly fascinating and has produced prints using a variety of techniques.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Cumbria and Lancashire over the last 25 years and she has been involved with projects including Printfest and C-Art and runs occasional print workshops for the National Trust at Allan Bank, Grasmere as well as for private groups.
Karen is an experienced qualified teacher and has been teaching in the adult education sector since 2011 Karenlester.com
