Meet The Artists: Presentation Is Everything – An Artist’s Guide To Getting Out There

This session is aimed at artists who would like to shape more effectively how they and their work is viewed by the outside world.
Artist & Writer Kate Brundrett will guide the audience on how to write an effective artist’s statement, and Freelance Curator & Printmaker Jamie Barnes will talk through the best way to mount and frame your work effectively. He will also share some tricks of the trade on how to hang exhibitions, as well as the best way to approach galleries.

The Presenters:

KATE GILMAN BRUNDRETT graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 1998 and City University in with an MA in Arts Management. She was Graphic Artist and Graphics Editor for The Independent / on Sunday, Visual Arts manager at Southwark Festival and co-founder of international art space Area10 – a 22,000 square foot warehouse in Peckham.

Kate returned to Cumbria in 2002 and founded The Cumbria Network, a creative development hub for 1000+ artists in the ‘north, north west’, co-founded FRED, one of Europe’s largest site specific festivals, and Online ‘Jobs & Opps’ Editor for a-n: The Artists Information Company, offering timely advice on the environment for visual art work to a membership of 20,000.

She continues her visual arts practice from her rural base in north England, specialising in drawing and illustration, installation and project management, and is co-Director of The Studio Morland, an Arts&Wellness space exploring the creative of contemporary culture and wellbeing, in the heart of the Eden Valley.

JAMIE BARNES is a Freelance Curator with almost 20 years experience of working in Museums, Galleries and Arts organisations across Cumbria and has hung nearly 200 exhibitions.

He was the Curator of Keswick Museum from 2004-2009 and helped gain a £2.3million HLF grant to enhance and preserve the building and collection.

In 2011 & 2014 Jamie was the Curator of the Open Up North open art competition for the Brewery Arts Centre, where he also works as the Visual Arts Officer.

Jamie also has his own printmaking practice specialising in aquatint etchings of structures in the landscapes. He exhibits widely at art and printmaking festivals across the UK, and recently did a year’s residency in the printmaking department at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).
