The Latin title of her fifth studio album ‘alterum’ gently suggests that this record offers a departure to what has gone before. Julie not only sings in English for the first time on one of her own albums
but also offers up a beautiful traditional Galician song, ‘Camariñas’, the result of a minority-language collaboration called ‘Facing the Atlantic’.
Grammy award-winning singer Mary Chapin Carpenter, with whom Julie collaborated on Transatlantic Sessions, features on Archie Fisher’s resonant ‘Windward Away’ and Mary Chapin also sings in Gaelic on the opening track of the record – the traditional tale of two sisters, one of whom is lost to the fairy people, in the Gaelic otherworld.
Mark Radcliffe (BBC Radio 2/6 Music) once described Julie’s songs ‘like beautiful messages from another world’. Julie explores the idea of ‘other worlds’ on this record, delving into the rich well of Gaelic material plus reaching out to other cultures, languages and traditions.
The album includes the beautiful song ‘Go Your Way’ which Julie learned from the singing of English folk icon Annie Briggs plus her own trademark Gaelic traditional material, thoughtfully crafted and arranged with husband and fellow musician Éamon Doorley. Julie also set a Gaelic poem called Circle about the Moon to music, which became the final song on the record.
