Joe Sacco, one of the world’s foremost cartoonists, is widely hailed as the creator of war reportage comics.
Political cartoonist Steve Bell talks to Joe about his compelling work as a comics journalist. The interview will look at why Joe, who was trained as a journalist, decided to report from war torn areas like Sarajevo, Chechnya and Palestine in a comic book format, how the medium helps him to provide an insight into complex issues of global politics while telling the stories of some of the ordinary people living in the middle of a conflict.
“The blessing of an inherently interpretive medium like comics is that it hasn’t allowed me to…make a virtue of dispassion. For good or for ill, the comics medium is adamant, and it has forced me to make choices. In my view, that is part of its message” Joe Sacco
