Introduction To Life Drawing

This course will provide an opportunity for people of all abilities, specific to beginners, to develop drawing direct from a life model. You will explore techniques that promote good drawing discipline related to working directly from life. You will be encouraged to try new techniques and have an experimental approach to some different drawing media. The higher fee for this workshop reflects using a life model each week.

What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?

Through a series of observational drawing tasks you will learn to:

  • Understand and apply measuring techniques to life drawing.
  • Apply a variety of experimental drawing techniques to life drawing.
  • Use a variety of drawing media.
  • Appreciate drawing techniques used by other artists.
  • Methods of learning in the course:
  • Practical work. Demonstration. Group work. Group discussion. One-to-one. Looking at work by other artists. Peer learning. Self-assessment. Tutor assessment.
  • By the end of the course/workshop you will be capable of :
  • Drawing from life with more confidence.
  • Using some basic measuring techniques in relation to life drawing.
  • Using a wider range of drawing media and drawing techniques within your practice.
  • Appreciating a wider range of artists work.

Please note there are no classes on the following dates:
Autumn term: 21 to 25 October; 11 to 13 October & 11 to 17 November 2019

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring an A2 size sketchbook or sheets of paper (a roll of cheap lining paper will do for quicker sketches), willow charcoal and putty rubber, soft graphite stick or pencil, masking tape or clips to attach your paper to a board. Other drawing media that can be used include pastels, compressed charcoals, conte etc. The tutor will let you know when you will need something specific.

When using art materials your clothes could potentially get dirty so you may wish to dress accordingly. Different media and materials will be used and you will be told what to bring on a weekly basis (low-cost options will always be given).

About the tutor (max 150 words)

Catherine MacDiarmid is a local artist who has exhibited widely, including exhibiting in the BP Portrait Award for young artists in 2001/2. She is an elected member of The Lakes Artists Society and appeared in Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2014, 2018 reaching the semifinals in 2019. As well as completing private portrait commissions her work is in collected internationally, and works from her home-based studio in Kendal. Her artwork focuses on the human form, exploring expression and movement in both drawing & painting. www.catherinemacdiarmid.co.uk
