Got a sewing machine sitting in a cupboard gathering dust? Want to make your own clothes or home furnishings but don’t know where to start? This class will give you the confidence to develop your skills to get to know your sewing machine and help get you started working with textiles.
What will the class cover and how will it be taught?
Clare will deliver the course through practical demonstrations providing the opportunity to ask questions and take notes. You will be guided and supported, practicing the techniques covered in each session. This is a relaxed learning environment aimed at having some fun while nurturing your talents. It will cover:
- Know your machine
- How to thread a machine and how to wind a bobbin
- How to check the tension for the material
- How to solve common problems and work safely
- How to sew straight seams. Start and finish them
- Gain knowledge of using different machine feet to create more unusual effects
- Practice zigzag and curves
- Sew your own project such a purse or bag
Who is it suitable for?
The course will suit the complete beginner who needs help getting started with the basics as well as a sewer who needs a refresher to build their confidence.
What do I need to bring?
- Sewing machine with its machine accessories and tools
- Scissors for cutting out fabric
- Hand sewing scissors
- Tape measure
- Thread unpicker
- Maximum 1m fabric matching thread and any other trims needed (for your project)
Are there any additional costs?
All materials are included in the course fee.

With her extensive global sourcing, technical, design and manufacturing experience in Europe, Asia and the Far East, Clare will bring her passion and vast experience of the fashion world and will lead you through this exciting course.
