If you have a guitar and have learned a few chords, this course will assist you in putting your knowledge to good use and to start enjoying playing. This course aims to help you play your favourite songs by explaining some of the basics that are often not clear when tackling songs downloaded from guitar websites or found in guitar song books. It will also develop skills to play songs ‘by ear’, expanding your repertoire of songs across a range of styles.
What will the course or workshop cover and how will it be taught?
Using tutor demonstration, video and audio examples, One to one and small group coaching, the course will cover:
- Chord knowledge
- Basic music theory and ‘ear training’
- Popular song structure
- Strumming patterns
By the end of the course/workshop you will:
- Know how to identify the ‘key’ of a song
- Recognise time signatures
- Identify appropriate strumming patterns and tempo
- Have the skills to work out a simple song by ear
- Be equipped to compose your own songs using traditional popular song structure
What do I need to bring with me?
An acoustic guitar, and a notebook, pen and your glasses if needed.

About the tutor
Keith Redfern is a musician and music facilitator/tutor who has taught guitar for many years. His work includes leading music workshops and performing live in bands in the course of which he is continually learning, playing and writing songs. He thinks that if he can do it anyone can!
