Born in Dallas in 1940, Gilbert Shelton’s impact on underground comix cannot be underestimated. In 1968, after contributing to various publications with his earliest character Wonder Warthog, he created The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Since 1975 Fat Freddy’s Cat has led a successful, independent life and Not Quite Dead, the world’s least successful rock band, has appeared in a series of comics of its own. Now, almost 50 years later, The Freak Brothers go from strength to strength.
Warren Bernard is an Eisner-nominated comics historian as well as Executive Director of the highly-regarded Small Press Expo in Maryland, USA. On his first visit to LICAF Warren fulfils one of his life’s ambitions – to be up close and personal with THE Fabulous Furry Freak Brother.
