About the course:

Crank clay is ideal for quickly developing a sculptural idea. By the end of the day you will have made your own ceramic sculpture for the garden or other specific site with the help of knowledgeable tutor and ceramicist Chris Barnes.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring an apron and/or wear old clothes. Please bring a pen, notebook and your glasses, if you need them. All materials are included in the cost of the workshop.

This workshop will enable you to develop your ideas with reference to contemporary and historical sculpture. By the end of the day you will have made your own ceramic sculpture for the garden or other specific site with the guidance of the tutor.

Your work will be dried and fired ready for collection on the following Saturday.

The class is run with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. A creative approach to design and making is encouraged.

During the course you will be shown:

 How to make a clay sculpture for the garden or other outdoor site.

 Ways to think about how composition and form interact with the environment.

 How to work with the limitations and strengths of the material.

 How to make use of the textural qualities the material offers.

 An introductory theoretical resume of the drying and firing of clay.

Your tutor will discuss the course content with the class and may make some adjustments to the syllabus based on the needs of the group. He will also try to accommodate individual requirements where possible.

This is a practical making day. There will be a break of 30 minutes for lunch.

Most of the Brewery is accessible for those who consider themselves to have a disability. There is a lift to all floors within the main building and adapted toilets.
