Explore….Book Illustration | Sat 19 Mar | 11.15am-5.15pm | £65 (includes tea and coffee)| 16 + | Tutor Sophie Martin | Studio 3
Got a fantastic story and want to bring it to life? Or just intrigued about how a book can be illustrated through images? Our Explore Book Illustration workshop will give you lots of tools and tips for illustrating your own story.
What will the workshop cover?
We will begin with looking at some book illustration examples for inspiration and warm up with some simple character design. Using a provided text, we will look at how to divide a story into pages for a book and use this to create storyboards as a visual guide to how the book will be paced.
Participants can pick individual pages from their storyboards to create ‘roughs’ to show how each page will look with a focus on page layout, composition and the interplay of words and text on a page. These ‘roughs’ will then be worked up into final versions of the pages using a choice of artistic mediums. Depending on how fast individuals work there may be time to progress on to multiple pages of the narrative but everyone will be encouraged to work at their own pace.
Throughout the day there will be opportunities for class discussion and the sharing of ideas, inspirations and feedback and suggestions on each other’s work in the form of informal critiques if participants are comfortable with this.
Who is it for?
This class is perfect for those with an interest in book illustration or an idea in mind but who don’t know where to begin with it. No specific illustration experience is necessary but some prior drawing experience would be beneficial and an interest in the creative and imaginative is a must!
What do I need to bring with me?
There will be paper and some basic art materials provided but if you have favourite materials you prefer to work with then please bring them along.
Please also feel free to bring along examples of book illustrations that you find inspiring and would like to share.
