Gesso has a wide application for every water-based media, acrylics, watercolour, gouache and inks. You will build up the surface on paper, card and canvas and use this base to make your image. We also use textured backgrounds of gesso.

What will the workshop cover and how will it be taught?

We start with a series of sample textures, then create images with built up gesso, wonderful for creating mountain and rock forms. I do several demonstrations to show the method and bring examples of work demonstrating some uses of this base medium. Suitable for using with watercolour, gouache and acrylic paint. You may like to experiment.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will be provided with gesso in a container, a fork, magic tape, and a choice of materials to make impressions. Bring with you your paints and brushes, some old rags, an old tea towel is best, and a ruler, pencil, coloured pencil. Also bring a plastic sheet or old newspaper to protect the table.

You may like to bring reference material, photos or sketches.

Are there any additional costs?

Any other costs would be for paint, paper or card that you need to bring with you. If you are restricting your budget bring a basic set of gouache paints. White, yellow, permanent rose, burnt umber, ultramarine blue and Black . I would add Windsor blue as a greeny blue to this. You can paint anything with these colours.
