Etching – A Painterly Approach

Creative Learning |
21st June 2018

21 June | Thursday | 10.30am – 4.30pm |Karen Lester | £63.00 | max 6 people

Experiment with sugar lift techniques to produce painterly tonal prints. Using aluminium plates and copper sulphate you will create images through a process involving painting a sugar solution onto the plate for etching.

What do I need to bring with me? Are there any additional costs?

Please bring along sketches or photographs, designs and ideas for reference. You will be working from these to make your plates. Ideally images with areas of tone rather than linear images.

Print making is messy so wear old clothes! You are advised to bring-

  • An apron or old shirt to protect clothes.
  • Gloves – latex or plastic

Be aware that some chemicals in inks and cleaning materials may affect those with certain medical conditions e:g sensitive skin.

All materials are included.

Please bring a pen, notebook and your glasses, if you need them.

More details on what the course covers:

You will be guided through the processes of etching and application of the sugar solution, creating tone through stopping out and management of timings in the copper sulphate etching solution. There will be opportunity to experiment further by adding line to your plates.

Tutor led demonstrations, discussion, example work and handouts will guide you through the process. You will be supported throughout. Participants are encouraged to experiment with the emphasis very much on individual practical experience. There will be opportunities to discuss results individually.

Some previous experience of etching will be useful. An understanding of the processes particularly around plate preparation and building tone will be an advantage.

Access and facilities:

Most of the Brewery is accessible for those who consider themselves to have a disability. There is a lift to all floors within the main building and adapted toilets. On occasion classes may take place in Room 14, with access via stairs only.  Please contact the Adult Learning Team on 01539 722833 Ext 273/275 if you wish to discuss any specific needs or email kate.lund@breweryarts.co.uk
