Create a wire bird sculpture using fabric wire and wax that oozes character and charm. Discover… Mixed Media Wire Birds introduces you to working with a combination of different materials techniques that brings together mixed media processes, textiles and stitch to realise your vision.
What will the workshop cover and how will it be taught?
Explore the extraordinary possibilities of working with lightweight wire to create small-scale bird sculptures. Discover how to shape wire by simply using pliers and fingertip manipulation to make a structure. Priscilla will share with you her unique combination of creative techniques to embellish your bird using layers of fabric and wax before adding touches of paper, paint, buttons, beads and hand stitch.
As the birds develop you will see their distinct characters unfolding and becoming your own unique creations. All equipment and most materials are provided see list for suggested things to bring. Please feel free to bring any additional materials you wish to work with, Priscilla’s workshops always encourage you to develop personal pieces of work.
Who is it suitable for?
This workshop would suit anyone who enjoys working with mixed media techniques, fabric, wire and paper.
What do I need to bring?
- An apron
- Scissors
- A small collection of lightweight fabrics – cotton and silks work best.
- A small selection of scrap paper
- A large wooden cotton reel
- Please feel free to bring any additional haberdashery – including buttons, lace and threads.

About the tutor
Priscilla’s practice is rooted in contemporary textiles but encompasses a broad range of materials, processes and techniques. Her work explores themes relating to identity, memory and nostalgia drawing inspiration from her collections of found objects, ephemera, literature and film. She has exhibited across the UK, Sweden, Germany and the US and is part of ‘Decorum’ a group of artists exhibiting mixed media textiles and embroidery.
Priscilla has over 20 years of teaching experience working in Higher Education lecturing in several Fashion and Textile Departments including the University of Salford and University of Cumbria. She currently tutors for the University of Creative Arts in Farnham through their partner OCA, and runs independent workshops for schools, colleges and galleries.
