“If comedy be the food of love…laugh on!”

This months line-up of top stand-up comedians includes Canadian Wes Zaharuk,  Liverpudlian funnyman Chris Cairns and winner of 2013 BBC New Comedy Award Steve Bugeja.

Steve will now also get to make his own show with BBC Radio Comedy his victory was won after being judged in two gruelling heats then the final was decided by an online poll and phone voting. The live broadcast on Radio 2 was hosted by Patrick Kielty.

When asked about his love of comedy he said:

“I always admired stand-up comedians growing up. I just love the idea that one person could entertain so many people at once. Then I had a go myself and I got hooked. The buzz of getting a laugh is incredible. I've never done drugs, but I imagine they wouldn't be as good. And yes it's scary, but a 'good scary'. Not like drugs, which are 'a bad scary'.”

The BBC Radio New Comedy Awards first appeared in 1995 and the finals of this event have boasted many well known names that have continued to work in comedy to great acclaim. Previous winners of the award are The Mighty Boosh'sJulian Barratt, Marcus Brigstocke, and Rhod Gilbert. Notable finalists include Peter Kay, Lee Mack and Sarah Millican.
