Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking scale in Clueless. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover.

When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was – and falls for him.

This modern interpretation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma is colourful, highly self-aware and satirical. Whilst it does examine social class and economic status like Austen’s work, this time around the story is mostly an observation and critique of teen culture. Clueless operates as an incredible time capsule, providing a perfect snapshot of American high school life in the 1990s.

“[Clueless is] like a carefully researched, highly detailed snapshot of a time and place that never really existed anywhere other than on film.” The Guardian

“Alicia Silverstone makes a delectable teen queen in “Clueless,” a candy-colored, brightly satirical showcase for her decidedly visual talents.” The New York Times

★★★★ “Jane Austen’s Emma meets Beverley Hills 90210 in US West Coast teen lifestyle parody.” Empire

“The movie emerges as a breath of fresh air in a summer where most of the comedy has been formulaic.” Variety
