Make some simple soft-backed books using different bookbinding techniques as well as a hard-backed book to take home for yourself or for a handmade gift just in time for Christmas.
What will the workshop cover and how will it be taught?
You will be shown how to make a soft-backed book using simple pamphlet stitch and Japanese stab binding and have the time to experiment individually with making some different versions for yourself with tutor guidance when needed. We will also make a hard-backed book with multiple signatures.
By the end of the workshop you will:
- Create soft-backed books using pamphlet stitch and Japanese stab binding
- Create a hard-backed book with multiple signatures
- Understand the use of various specific bookbinding terms such as perfect bound, signature, pamphlet stitch and bone folder
What do I need to bring?
Any interesting pieces of paper or card that you have that you would like to incorporate into your books as covers or endpapers. Endpapers should be A5 size and cover papers will need to be at least A4 size. Also pieces of ribbon and thread if you like. There will be plenty of all of these available though so it is really only if you have a particular material you would like to use.
Tea and coffee are included but you may wish to bring a packed lunch.

All other materials and equipment are included.
About the tutor
Sophie Martin is a local artist, illustrator and educator who specialises in lively pen and watercolour illustrations often drawn on location. She studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and has worked since as a freelance artist and illustrator undertaking numerous commissions and exhibiting locally and further afield as well as self-publishing a number of books. Sophie enjoys experimenting with a variety of different artistic mediums and is always looking for new techniques to try out and share in her creative classes. She has a PGCE in Post compulsory education and has experience running creative workshops in many places including schools, colleges, adult education centres and for refugee groups in India and Nepal.
