Learn to sew and make garments using patterns, or make accessories and household items for yourselves or for gifts. Have fun adding decoration, including applique and beading plus mixing and matching different fabrics.

What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
The tutor will bring along a project on the first session to get everyone started; you will then be encouraged to sources commercial patterns and fabric to bring along to class.

You will learn by tutor demonstration and then by having a go yourself with the tutor always on hand to give help and advice.

  • What do I need to bring with me?
  • If you have sewing machine, please bring it along. There will be a handful of sewing machines to use on request but if you are able please bring your own.
  • You will need to purchase patterns and fabric as the course progresses, but will be told about this as we go along.
  • A basic sewing kit would be useful, scissors (two pairs, one for paper and one for fabric), needles and a variety of threads, pins, tape measure.
  • Please also bring along, 2H pencils and a ruler and/or set square for pattern cutting.

For the first session please bring along a 1m pieces of fabric. This could be a piece of calico, or simply an old sheet that could be used to make a ‘toile’ in order to check for fit. It does not need to be anything special!

About the tutor
Caren studied fashion design at University of Salford and then worked in the fashion industry as a designer of Ladies’ and Children’s wear for well-known high street stores.

Today Caren’s uses wool & silk fibres in a ‘painterly’ way in order to create textural moody felt pieces that depict landscapes, seascapes & floral designs. As well as felt, Caren works in other textile media including: Batiks, Silk Paintings, Hand Made Silk Paper pieces & Devore.
In addition to creating & selling her own work, Caren teaches adult classes & workshops as well as privately. She also teaches Art in primary schools throughout Cumbria and Lancashire.

Please note there is no class during the following weeks:
Half term week commencing 22 October
Week commencing 12 November due to Kendal Mountain Festival
Half term week commencing 18 February 2019
