About the course:

Create lively animal sculptures of your pet or favourite animal using photos as inspiration. Learn how to express movement, stillness, contrasts in texture and softness and enhance your work with details that evoke greater clarity.

What do I need to bring?

Students are encouraged to bring their own images for reference. All materials and tools are included. Please bring an apron and/or wear old clothes. Please bring a pen, notebook and your glasses, if you need them.

More details on what the course covers:

At this workshop you will be helped to create lively sculptures using photographic reference material. Your tutor will demonstrate how to make 3D representations from 2D images by careful measuring from multiple angles and inspired guesswork. Learn how to express movement, stillness, contrasts in texture and softness – and enhance your work with details that evoke clarity.

Experience of working with clay is an advantage, but not essential.

The class is run with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. A creative approach to design and making is encouraged.

Areas covered:

  • Basic modelling with clay.
  • How to use the strengths of your material.
  • How to make useful observations from multiple photographic sources.
  • Analyse how to find essential characteristics.
  • Finding what to accentuate and what to ignore to express what you see.

The finished pieces are then dried and fired at The Brewery ready for collection on the following Saturday.

Most of the Brewery is accessible for those who consider themselves to have a disability. There is a lift to all floors within the main building and adapted toilets. On occasion classes may take place outside the main building with access via stairs only.  Please contact the Adult Learning Team on 01539 722833 Ext 273/275 if you wish to discuss any specific needs or email adult.ed.admin@breweryarts.co.uk
